Poultry and Products
POLAND, August 28, 2002 -- In 2001, poultry trade
increased, but mainly between Poland and the EU. EU exporters
received advantages regarding access which resulted in a
decrease of U.S. exports. Consumption is continuing to rise,
as Poles favor poultry for its health and cost benefits, a
positive trend for importers. New importers may find the
easiest market access through established companies. However,
U.S. poultry meat may be barred market access to Poland as
Poland accedes to the European Union, as early as 2004.

BRAZIL, August 29, 2002 -- Both beef and pork production
are forecast to increase in 2003 in response to continued
export growth. Domestic meat consumption will be affected by
competition from poultry meat, higher inflation, and a decline
in consumer purchasing power. Anticipated higher feed costs
will likely trim profit margins for hog producers. The
uncertainties regarding the Brazilian economy and the
volatility of the exchange rate are key factors that can
affect the overall performance of the sector.

General Election and GM Crop Find
NEW ZEALAND, August 29, 2002 -- In the wake of New
Zealand's July 27 general election, the Labour Party has
formed a formal coalition with the Progressive Coalition Party
and gained support on confidence and money supply from the
United Future Party. The United Future Party has indicated
that it is in favor of letting the moratorium on the release
of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) expire. Consequently,
it now becomes more likely that the moratorium will be lifted
in October 2003. Separately, MAF has just implemented a new,
stricter GM testing regime for seed imports, which comes at a
time when a crop of animal feed hybrid corn grown for seed was
found to contain illegal genetically modified (GM) seeds.
