Rodent attack on sunflower crop eliminated

HYDERABAD (March 12 2003) : The rodent attack on Sunflower crop in Golarchi Taluka of Badin District came to an end following the crop crossed over tillage and seedling stages.

The team of experts headed by the Director Plant protection Sindh Agriculture Extension rushed to the spot following the news of rodent attack, confirmed that the crop remained under rodent attack for about one month between 15th December to 15 Jan 03 but later following the rain and the crop crossed the tillage and germination stage, the attack died down. The team observed that at various stages the crop was re-sown.

The team said that the crop condition is satisfactory and it was in vegetative phase, boot, and at flowering stages and at places it was in harvesting stage while at some places the sowing is in progress.

The team maintains that at some places farmers for the first time switched over to sunflower crop during August, where rice was not planted due to shortage of water and the crop is presently at harvesting stages.

Referring to rodent attack the team was of the view that the massive rodent attack on the crop was due to prolonged drought, water shortage coupled with climatic conditions and less care of Kul grass and non-removal of rice straws and delay in paddy threshing.

The Rodent, the experts maintained, are a serious agriculture pest, it eats seed, and seedlings but it damages crop at all stages more than what they consumed.

A major problem in combating the rodent menace is its high rate of reproduction and breeding at three-month age. They said no less than 40 species have been identified in Pakistan.

They said the most successful and the quickest method of controlling is application of poison baits, which could be prepared by mixing Zinc phosphate & Recumin power with wheat flour, grains, or rice.

The experts suggest that in view of rice growers switching to edible oil crop training should be arranged in collaboration with vertebrate pest control PARC before the slowing of next crop.
