Farmers advised to sow maximum sunflower
HYDERABAD (February 04 2003) : The Director General Agriculture Research and Extension Sindh, has advised farmers to sow sunflower crop on maximum area, for which the oilseed development section Tandojam will extend all technical assistance, including good quality seed of desi sunflower variety at reasonable rates.
He said that during the 2002-2003, the area target for sunflower cultivation has been fixed at 0.15 million acres for the Sindh province, Major portion of which is sown in Badin, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Sanghar districts.
He said that not only there is good market for sunflower, but also it is a short duration crop and needs less water.
He said that spring crop of Sunflower can be sown from January 1 to February 15 in lower Sindh and during whole month of February in upper Sindh, whereas autumn crop is cultivated during first fortnight in lower Sindh and during whole of August in upper Sindh.
Both desi and hybrid varieties can be sown, seed of which is also available.
The sowing can be done through seed drill or broadcasting. The complete production technology can be obtained from the oilseed section of Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam or Director Agriculture Information, Agriculture Extension Hyderabad.
The DG Agriculture has also directed the District Officers Agriculture to mobilise their field staff for promotion of sunflower cultivation in their districts and for guidance of farmers in this respect.
In desi variety crop of sunflower, bee keeping can also be simultaneously organised, which will not only enhance the yield of the crop, but also become additional source of income for farmers.
