Agriculture sector's promotion vital to meet WTO challenges
ISLAMABAD (February 02 2003) : Agriculture sector in the country needs to be promoted and strengthened to meet the forthcoming challenges of WTO.
Dr Waqar Malik CSO/In-charge Social Science Division PARC stated this while addressing a Seminar on "WTO Agreement on Agriculture and its implications for Pakistan" organised by members of scientists club here on Saturday.
Dr Waqar Malik said that suitable measures should be taken by both public and private sectors to safeguard the interests of farmers and other stakeholders.
He stressed the need to make people aware of the Agreement and its repercussion.
He said that the three terms of the Agreement are Market accession; Domestic support and Export subsidy.
The developing countries are supposed to replace quotas, controls and tariffs by simple tariffs, to reduce Domestic support by 13.3 percent and export subsidy by 24 percent.
The goal of the Agreement, he said, is to help producers of goals and services, exporters and importers to conduct their business in fair and transparent way.
The Agreement will come into force on 1st January 2005 so we need to take necessary steps to make our products and processes in accordance with ISO standards and to compete in the world.
