What the WTO holds in store
ISLAMABAD (April 22 2003) : The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce
& Industry (ICCI) has called for a national policy to face
the challenges of WTO regime particular in the 'agriculture
industry'.
Senior Vice President, Khan Abbas Khan, made these assertion while addressing a seminar "The World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Agriculture Industry of Pakistan" on Monday, stated that the agriculture Industry of Pakistan is an area which needs the serious and urgent attention of Government at the time as it is facing the hard challenges to compete the other countries in international markets and to provide the self-reliance in wheat and other agricultural items.
"Pakistan is a best wheal providing country in the world and has a suitable environment to produce some precious agricultural products.
But unfortunately due to lack of useful agriculture system and we have been failed to get the advantage of these suitable conditions and our small farmers are particularly passing through a hard time," Khan stated.
"Moreover, the WTO laws are about to implemented those will immediately affect our agriculture industry as well as the other industries. As these will allow the exports of only that products those will fulfil not only of WTO but will also not hurt the rules and regulations of labour", he said.
"This situation will hurt the small farmers in general, those are unaware and unprepared about the expected regime. The government should evolve a policy to face this challenge and make the able its products to fulfil these conditions," Abbas maintained.
He also demanded for starting a national awareness programme for preparing the small farmers to face WTO and providing them the information about these laws.
