Canada appeals WTO decision on its dairy exports
OTTAWA (September 25 2002) : The Canadian government on Monday appealed a World Trade Organisation decision that had ruled against Canada's controversial dairy export programme.
In challenging the ruling in favour of the United States and New Zealand, Canadian International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew called attention to changes to the export programme that had been made in response to earlier trade action.
It was the latest salvo in a battle that has been running for nearly five years at the World Trade Organisation, involving multiple levels of panels and appeals.
"We believe there are compelling legal grounds for appealing," Pettigrew said in a statement.
The appellate body is expected to make its decision by late December.
