Businessmen urged to understand WTO rules
LAHORE (November 03 2002) : The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Acting Chief, Pervaiz Anwar Sheikh has stressed the need for educating the business community and government officials towards genuine adoption, re-orientation and sincere understanding of the issues for meaningful survival of the national economy in the new set of WTO rules.
Electronic media and comprehensive web-based services should be used for result oriented awareness, he said while addressing the opening session of one-day workshop on "Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development" held here on Saturday.
The LCCI and the Ministry of Commerce jointly organised the workshop. Adil Najam, Mohammed Akber Sheikh and others spoke on the occasion.
Structural facilitation by the state especially with emphasis on policy initiatives with right perspective is indispensable, the LCCI chief said.
He added that the role of the government functionaries and policy makers is very crucial to reacting fast to the global changes and to implement fast track action plan to effect necessary revisions and processes.
The government should formulate incentive-based policies to encourage the private sector to adopt the new scheme of things in line with the international trends, he remarked.
He was of the view that public and the private sectors need to join hands to explore the ground realities and correspondingly develop a comprehensive action plan. We, in fact, need to understand the growing sensitivity of the international markets and the customers in accordance with the WTO rules and regulations, which now form the basics of product and service demands, rising from the vibrant consumer markets of the developed world, he said.
If we want to attain and sustain our share of exports of goods and services in the international markets, we have to follow the rules of the game, that now include focussing on quality, environment and social standards in our products as well as services.
