Veterinary College to become first university

LAHORE-The Punjab government has decided in principal to grant College of Veterinary Sciences Lahore the status of animal sciences university.

If this decision sees the light of the day, it will be the first animal sciences university of the country. The college administration has been asked to prepare a plan to this effect with the help of Provincial Livestock Department. The ultimate purpose of this activity is to grant College of Veterinary Sciences the status of a university shortly.

Provincial Livestock Department had raised this issue during a presentation to the Governor Punjab. The idea to establish a full fledge animal science university came for consideration on many occasion in the last so many years but due to lack of commitment it could not be translated into reality.

When contacted, an official of Livestock and Dairy Development Department said that establishment of a premier animal research institute was a need of hour especially keeping in view the contribution of livestock sector in the GDP. He said that for first time in the history of the country, the livestock sector contributed more than the four major crops in the GDP in 1999-2000. "Pakistan also stand among the top ten milk producer countries of the world", he informed.

He said that in India, as many as six animal sciences university have been established on different locations. The official was of the view that establishment of such institution would be vary helpful in animal care in the country.

It may be noted that College of Veterinary Science was established at Lahore in 1881 in the form of a Veterinary School which was later raised to the status of a college. Currently, the college is working under University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The College imparts training for the degree in D.V.M. It also offers M.Sc. degree courses in the subjects of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Microbiology, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Parasitology, Poultry Hosbandry and Veterinary Pathology. Ph.D. degrees in various subjects are also offered at the College.
