Soomro for
new tech to revamp agri, irri systems
KARACHI –Sindh Governor Muhammedmian Soomro has underlined the
need for renovation of irrigation and agriculture systems by
utilising latest technology and all available means.
The Governor was addressing a meeting at Governor’s House here
on Friday evening, which was attended also by agriculture
experts from abroad. The experts spoke on the use of latest
technology for upgradation of agriculture and irrigation
system specially the drip irrigation.
The Governor’s mother Mohtarma Saeeda Soomro taking keen
interest in the promotion of agriculture in Sindh province had
invited agriculture experts and representatives of growers
from abroad and Punjab for interaction with Sindh Government
authorities and the growers.
Sindh Governor, on the occasion, asked the concerned
authorities to make serious efforts for the promotion/
upgradation of agriculture and irrigation as in the past the
province had been suffering a lot due to negligence in this
regard.
The Governor directed to put the system on modern lines at the
earliest under a clear strategy. He also asked the concerned
authorities to provide the required information to growers and
set clear targets for the field officers for the purpose.
Muhammedmian Soomro emphasised that the use of modern
technology be ensured in all phases of cultivation starting
from the levelling of land. Only in this way, he added, best
utilisation of available water could be made and increased per
acre production could be achieved.
The Governor urged introduction of drip irrigation and other
latest methods to the growers mainly those of saline areas. He
said the growers are the pivotal unit of the entire
exercise/strategy and their participation should be ensured at
all levels along with provision of maximum facilities to them.
He also stressed the active role of NGOs and elected
representatives specially Nazims besides setting up of
Cooperatives as part of strategy towards the promotion of
agriculture.
Earlier, renowned expert on irrigation, Jose Benites gave a
detailed briefing on drip irrigation and its use in garden,
nurseries and farms.
Governor’s mother Mohtarma Saeeda Soomro, agriculture expert
and grower from Punjab Begum Farooq Ayub, Hamad Kaiher,
Secretary Irrigation, Mir Muhammad Parhiyar, Secretary
Agriculture Abdul Rasheed Memon were among the participants.
