Plan to extract sugar from beet criticised

KARACHI-Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has criticised the government for its proposed plan switching over indigenous sugar industry from cane to beet. In a press statement, a PSMA (Punjab Zone) spokesman said that every one knew that climate of Punjab and Sindh was not suitable for sugarbeet cultivation. This meant bureaucracy was trying to waste public money for nothing, he added.

He said the sugar crisis prevailing in the country was the result of wrong policies of bureaucracy and the ministries of commerce and finance. Now by raising non-issues like production of sugar from beet, bureaucracy was trying to protect its wrong policies, he said. The spokesman expressed surprise over the news that the government had sought help from Iran for the production of sugar from beet.

In late 70s, he pointed out, it was Pakistan that transferred sugar technology to Iran. "Now, how Iran can offer better technology to Pakistan," he asked. The spokesman asked the government to take steps in the right direction to save the indigenous sugar industry.
