No water for Sindh from Tarbela dead level

ISLAMABAD, March 11: Endorsing recommendations of Irsa and WAPDA, the Chief Executive Secretariat has rejected Sindh's demand of water supply from Tarbela reservoir, where water has dropped to dead-level.

Official sources told NNI on Monday that the provincial administration had approached the Chief Executive Secretariat last month to get water from Tarbela.

The CE Secretariat sought viewpoint of Irsa and WAPDA, however, both these institutions strongly opposed the release of water from dead-level, saying it could lead to serious complications in future at the water reservoir.

The WAPDA authorities informed the Chief Executive Secretariat that in December 2000, they supplied water from dead-level, which led to serious troubles. They further maintained the delta at Tarbela had moved closer to the tunnels, posing a threat to the reservoir and turbines and in future such risk should not be taken.

Consequently, upholding the viewpoint of Irsa and WAPDA, the Chief Executive Secretariat has refused supply of water from dead-level to Sindh or any other province. Irsa controls water supply from Tarbela only above the dead-level and when water surface touches dead-level, it falls into the domain of WAPDA.
