Libya to buy wheat, rice from
Pakistan
KARACHI: Libya is interested in buying 200,000 tonnes of wheat
and 50,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan, said Chairman Export
Promotion Bureau (EPB), Tariq Ikram here on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference at the EPB premises following
his return from the tour of Libya and Kenya, the EPB chief
said that the total value of exports of the two items was
expected to be around $70 to $80 million.
Tariq said that a single country trade exhibition was being
organised in Libya by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) in June this year in order to
boost bilateral trade between the two countries.
The EPB chief said that during his visit to Kenya many aspects
of bilateral trade were discussed with the Kenyan counterparts
and it was decided to set up warehousing facilities for the
Pakistani exporters in Nairobi. He also said that Kenya agreed
to lift the ban on the import of Pakistani onion during his
visit.
He further claimed that the Kenyan government had agreed to
include 70 medicines of Pakistan origin in its import list. He
expressed his surprise that the pharmaceutical products from
Pakistan were not being exported to Kenya.
The EPB chief while replying to a question regarding the
cancellation of wheat shipments to Iraq said that there was a
potential order of 300,000 tonnes of wheat to Iraq and it had
given a trial order of 100,000 tonnes but the two shipments
had been cancelled by the Iraqi government due to
specification snags.
He said that his job was only that of marketing and the
realisation of orders is the responsibility of TCP and other
government functionaries. About the Karachi Expo Centre, he
said that a contract has been given to M/s Indexasia. Tariq
Ikram also declined to give details of a visit by a delegation
of women entrepreneurs to the US on the EPB's expenses.
