Drip and sprinkle method can save water
KARACHI-The adoption of drip and sprinkle irrigation not only saves water but also results in more yield of various crops.
This was stated by the Director General of Tropical Agriculture Research Centre (TARC), Karachi, Dr. Haji Khan Keerio, here on Feb 18, 2002. He said that the TARC Karachi has undertaken experimentation in this respect at its Coastal Agricultural Reserach Station located at Saleh Mohamad Goth near Karachi's Landhi area.
Keerio stated that the Station spreads over an area of 25 acres. The land was given by the government of Sindh.
He was of the view that the drip and sprinkle irrigation is especially beneficial in view of the prevailing water shortages. Through this approach, it was stated, 50 percent water can be saved as compared to the traditional method of irrigation whereas more yield is
obtained.
Keerio said that experimentation in connection with the drip and sprinkle irrigation is continuing at the TARC Karachi's station as well as at the fields of the farmers in the area and has proved to be successful so far.
He stated that such an approach not only results in economical use of water but also results in more yield.
Keerio further pointed out that four tubewells have also been installed. One at the research station and three at the sites of the farmers- two in Karachi's Malir area and one in Uthal, Balochistan province.
He said that experiments are also being undertaken for growing various varieties of the fruits in the coastal areas especially those fruits that require less water.
