Wheat
cultivation in Sindh short of target
DIGRI-Wheat cultivation target which was set for the current
year could not be met fully as wheat crop could not be
cultivated on 4,60.000 acres of ferile land due to acute
shortage of irrigation water in Sindh province.
This was disclosed in a report issued by Department of
Agriculture (Extension) Sindh the other day which stated that
the target for wheat cultivation on 10,40,000 hectares of land
was fixed
for the current year but wheat crop could be sowed on 53,500
hectares of land only up to 7th January, 2002 while 4,60,000
acres of land was left uncultivated due to acute shortage of
water for irrigation purposes.
According to report, Digri Sub-Division was allocated 35% of
target, i.e., 2,28,000 hectares but it could not be met fully.
Now it is the most affected area where one fourth area of
target could not be cultivated, even the cultivated wheat crop
is whithering without proper irrigation.
