Scientists urged to educate farmers about 'Zero Tillage'
ISLAMABAD (December 13 2002) : Scientists can play an important role in socio-economic uplift of the country utilising their capabilities in various fields particularly in agriculture sector.
This was stated by the Chairman, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (Parc), Dr Badaruddin Soomro, while speaking at the two-day National workshop on Rice-Wheat cropping system Management at the National Agricultural Research Centre (Narc), here on Thursday.
Soomro said that 75 percent population of the country depends on agriculture for their livelihood so a big challenge lies ahead before the agricultural scientists to promote this sector through their expertise.
He urged them to apprise the farmers about the usefulness of Zero Tillage technology in enhancing wheat production.
Director General, Narc, Dr Naeem Hashmi, said that Zero Tillage Technology was helpful to do away with rice stubble problem and ensures timely wheat sowing. Before this technology rice stubble caused a month delay in wheat sowing which reduced production by 20 to 30 kg per acre for each day delay, he added.
He said agriculture sector is facing a number of challenges including salinity, water wastage decrease of organic matters, reduced production which need to be tackled by the scientists.
Dr Craig A. Meisner, CIMMYT Co-Facilitator Rice Wheat Consortium for Indo-Gangetic Plains appreciated the efforts of Pakistani scientists in the field of agriculture and hoped the workshop would help exchange of ideas among scientists and evolution of better strategy for production enhancement.
The workshop was attended by participants from 41 different fields of research, management and machinery sectors of the country.
