Punjab to get full
water share from 21st: secy irrigation
LAHORE-Punjab will start receiving its full water share from
April 21 under the Water Accord 1991. Punjab sacrificed some
portion of its water share for Sindh as a goodwill gesture to
help the growers there and now it will get back its share to
utilise it for cotton crop.
This was observed by Secretary Irrigation Punjab Javed Majeed
while addressing at a seminar organised by Irrigation Power
Union (CBA) at Hamdard Centre here on Monday. The seminar was
titles 'How to serve people better' and workers of the union
from all over the province participated in it.
Javed Majeed said that Punchaiat committees had been
constituted in 3,800 villages of the province to resolve
disputes among farmers on water issues. Training of the
members had been started and those committees would start
working from July 1. A pilot project for this purpose had
already been launched at Faisalabad, he added. Javed assured
the workers that the Irrigation Department would not render
any of its employee jobless.
He said that the department would carry out rightsizing of
about 12,000 redundant posts out of 50,000 employees. The
posts would be abolished but the staff would be accommodated
on suitable posts by providing necessary training to them for
making the department more efficient and public friendly, he
added. He said that recruitment of the required staff would
also be made accordingly.
He said that the department would also consider a plan to
improve residential facilities for the employees, education
for their children, facility of group insurance, and provision
of bicycles and motorcycles on instalments.
