President orders relief for small
farmers
ISLAMABAD-President Pervez Musharraf on Monday directed
Finance Ministry, Food and Agriculture Ministry and ADBP to
jointly draw a relief package for small farmers with focus on
drought-hit areas.
He stated that this package should be prepared within a month
and also include remission on the mark-up.
The President issued these directives after a presentation by
the Chairman Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP),
Istiqbal Mehdi.
President Musharraf said that small farmers, who constitute 60
to 70 percent of the agriculture sector, must get maximum
benefits of loans.
Moreover, he said, the new borrowers should also be encouraged
by giving loans to small farmers.
The Chairmen ADBP informed that the Bank has so far disbursed
Rs 21 billion out of Rs 32 billion targeted for the current
fiscal year.
The President directed that the remaining Rs 11 billion be
disbursed by end of this financial year, judiciously and
efficiently, keeping focus on small farmers and their needs
and requirements.
