PCSIR to help
industries raise export
KARACHI-The Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research (PCSIR) will provide necessary assistance and
technical facilities to the industrial sector to enhance
productivity and export. The project is one of various
programmes of the National Commission on Science and
Technology (NCST) for speeding up economic growth through the
application of science and technology.
For the implementation of the programme, the NCST is
facilitating the science and technology organisations involved
in various research and development activities to provide
necessary lead and assistance to the private sector for the
execution of various development projects.
Sources said that in a meeting recently held under the
chairmanship of Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, Minister for Science and
Technology, it was decided that the PCSIR would concentrate on
a few specialities like textile processing, pharmaceutical and
chemicals, material and metallurgy, food, leather, etc.
The PCSIR would work in close partnership with the private
sector industries for a quantum jump in productivity as well
as in export, including certification of products as required
under international conventions and protocols signed under the
WTO, ISO, etc. In this regard, the PCSIR has asked the trade
associations and business bodies for a detailed consultation
on the issue.
Sources said that the PCSIR and industrialists, two or three
from different sectors, would soon meet to decide the line of
action. The PCSIR has also issued a brief questionnaire to the
trade and business bodies asking priority areas for PCSIR
research and development work. The PCSIR has Research and
Development Laboratories in all the four provincial capitals
providing technical assistance to the private sector in the
form of technology innovation and improvement.
