Pak agro-based products
may attract good business in Chinese market
BEIJING - Pakistan agro-based
products including rice, wheat, vegetables, fruits, tobacco
and raw cotton may attract good business in the Chinese
market.
Pakistani exporters have been invited to introduce their
agro-based products at the fruit-vegetable fair being held in
Jilin province, north-east of China from August 15 to 20. "We
have already asked the Pakistani Export Promotion Bureau (EPB)
to send the names of the exporters, who are interested to
attend the exhibition," official sources told APP here on
Sunday.
China has opened up new opportunities for the foreign
companies to export agro-based products. The Chinese
government has also reduced its tariff structure, encouraging
the import of food items to meet their growing requirements.
According to the sources, after entering into WTO, the
government's involvement in promoting economic partnership
will be very negligible and it will be for the private sector
to take benefit of the growing business opportunities in China
by strengthening their bilateral contacts.
Sources said that China will prefer to import food items from
Pakistan in order to further strengthen their economic ties.
Pakistan fruit particularly mango is in great demand in China.
Mango, commonly known in Chine as friendship fruit. It has
rich potential to attract business in the Chinese market, if
necessary quality requirements are fulfilled.
Presently, China has been importing fruits such as apples from
France and Australia, oranges, papayas and tropical fruits
from South East Asian countries. Bananas are coming from
Ecuador and other Latin American countries and kiwi fruits are
imported from New Zealand.
According to an estimate, China's domestic import market of
farm produce has exceeded ten billion dollars in the recent
years. This will continue to show upward trend with growth of
population and increase in per capita income of the Chinese
people.
Pakistani businessmen may also enter into joint ventures with
Chinese companies to fetch maximum number of buyers of
Pakistan's fruits, both in fresh and canned, There are regular
flights of PIA twice in a week between China and Pakistan and
it is hoped that the increase in cargo traffic can give big
boost to air business and the airlines' role In enhancing
country's exports.
