Kharif crops: canal water
rotation directed
LAHORE - Secretary Agriculture,
Punjab, Junaid Iqbal, and Secretary Irrigation, Punjab, Jawed
Majeed, have directed the field formations of their
departments to plan canal water rotation for its equitable
distribution during the coming Kharif season.
They were addressing a joint meeting of officials of both the
departments held at the Central Cotton Research Institute,
Multan to review canal water availability for Kharif crops
like cotton and rice.
While giving an overview of the canal water situation in
Punjab, the secretary irrigation pointed out that the province
would face an overall shortage of 22 percent in its
traditional water usage during the Kharif season this year.
The shortage will be more acute, up to 44 percent during early
period of Kharif, but will mitigate during the latter part of
the season around 11 percent.
He said the water flow in canals and distributaries has to be
managed that maximum area could be brought under cotton and
rice cultivation. After discussing salient features of the
rotational plan, it was decided to hold another meeting on
April 23, to finalise the plan.
Later, addressing district agriculture officers and crop
breeders of the department, the secretary underscored the need
of evolving crop varieties requiring less water.
He also urged to promote production and marketing of mangoes.
