IRSA meeting on May 7
ISLAMABAD (April 28 2002) : The
Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has summoned its meeting
on May 07 to finalise the controversial Thal Canal and Satpara
Dam projects.
The sources said that the officials of Wapda and the Punjab
government have been asked to hold meeting with the Authority
on May 02 to discuss these projects and remedy the grievances
of the Sindh government.
Sindh has serious objections over Thal Canal project and they
also took up the matter with President Musharraf, but the
latter had announced at Minar-e-Pakistan that Thal Canal would
be completed.
Irsa had called a meeting on April 24 to discuss the issue,
but it was postponed on the apprehension that any
controversial news item could mar the referendum campaign
especially in Sindh where the government and political parties
have outright rejected the project.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec)
has recently approved the Thal Canal project, which, according
to sources, was not attended by any representative of the
Sindh government
