Integrated agri management system imperative for development

TANDO JAM (August 21 2003) : Sindh Acting Governor Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah has said that the integrated agriculture management system in the province is imperative for the development of agriculture sector in the province.

Addressing the teaching staff of Sindh Agriculture University here on Wednesday he said the integrated agriculture management system would help in transfer of modern methodology on crop pattern, farm management, and onfarm water management.Integrated agri management system imperative for development

He said Sindh Agriculture University, being the prime agriculture institution in the province should initiate co-ordinated plan for integrated agriculture management to provide access to modern technology to growers community at their doorsteps.

He said that decline in intensity of agriculture has brought many socio-economic problems. The governor said the decline was the result of lack of co-ordination amongst agro-based organisations and institutions working for the improvement of agriculture sector resulting in transfer of knowledge to people behind the plough.

Muzaffar Hussain Shah said unless the growers will have access to modern methods of cultivation, seeds, fertiliser, and pesticides he would continue to practice age-old methods of cultivation and the development of agriculture sector would remain a distant cry.

He said the agriculture economy of the province is inter-linked with River Indus through centuries and even today it remains on irrigation system. He said the present government is striving hard to revolutionise the agriculture sector by developing water resources which could be judged by the fact the President General Pervez Musharraf has offered a financial package of Rs 13 billion for improving the age-old worn- out irrigation network.

The governor said that the agriculture sector which generates 70 to 80 percent employment opportunities in the province has great potential which can only be exploited through the application of
modern technologies.
