Fool-proof water distribution system activated
SUKKUR-A fool-proof and proportionate distribution system have
been activated for the 7 Canals and other Distributaries of
Sukkur Barrage, keeping in view the 57 percent
water shortage faced these days.
An equal distribution has been arranged for the Nara and Rohri
Canals on the left bank, as a vast agri area upto the Thar
desert is irrigated under these canals. Chief Engineer (CE)
Sukkur Barrage, Muhammad Musa Memon told APP here on Thursday
that keeping in view growing demand from the users of Nara
Canal specially in Thar and Mirpurkhas divisions, he had taken
special initiative to give them some excess supply
from the present rotation quota. On Thursday Rohri Canal
received 4795 cusecs, while Nara Canal was supplied 5235
cusecs.
Chief Engineer said that Sukkur Barrage was receiving 16600
cusecs from its quota in the present crop season, out of which
14600 was used in Sukkur Barrage commandment area, and the
remaining 1950 cusecs was released for Kotri Barrage.
He dispelled the impression in categorical terms of any
discrimination in water supply for Kotri Barrage, or in any of
the canals, and added that an even handed approach was adopted
under strict guidline of the Sindh Irrigation Minister, Ali
Mir Shah. Presently the Rice Canal had been stopped supply,
because of technical reasons and the remaining 6 canals were
receiving their due share of water under the rotation schedule
deviced last month.
The CE Sukkur Barrage said that Sindh Irrigation Minister had
issued a directive for maintaining equal share of water for
both Nara and Rohri Canals. "As such there was no question of
any deviation from this practice", he remarked.
He said that under the share, Sukkur Barrage would have
received some 31800 cusecs, but due to 57 percent shortage it
was getting from 14000 to 16000 cusecs averagely. He said that
keeping in view this shortage, the Sukkur Barrage officials
were
doing their best to meet the agri requirements even at the
tail ends.
Referring to the hue and cry about indiscriminate water
distribution in a section of the press, CE Sukkur Barrage said
that this was almost impossible, and also it was not in the
interest of the growers or the deparrtment. He disclosed that
Director Hydrology Department, Hyderabad Syed Noor Muhammad
Shah had specially been assigned the task of measuring and
checking the river discharge from Sukkur Barrage for onwards
area. He said that on November 28 last the Director Hydrology
had carried a thorough inspection here, and had later gave an
okay report in which he declared that an equal and
indiscriminate discharge of water flowed from Sukkur Barrage
towards Kotri Barrage.
He said, as soon as the situation normalised from upstream of
Sukkur Barrage, more water would be made available for meeting
the crop needs in the next season.
